Located in the heart of Bodenwerder's historic old town, the building has always stood at the point where the Weser River could be crossed. This was done using ferries, pontoons, and bridges. In 1883, the first road bridge was built upstream of the Weser. After that, the ferry house was used exclusively as a residential building. Bodenwerder lives with the legacy of Baron Münchhausen. But this charming town on the Weser River has much more to offer. St. Gertrude's Chapel, dating from 1543, is one of the oldest Latin schools. It has also served as the town church, a prison, a refuge for the homeless, and an art gallery. In the northern district of Kemnade, the St. Mary's Monastery Church is a magnificent example of Romanesque architecture, the most beautiful in the Weser Uplands. It is over 1,000 years old. Baron von Münchhausen is buried there in the family tomb. A memorial plaque in front of the altar commemorates the town's most famous son.
