The lock keeper was responsible for irrigation in the Bruchhausen-Vilsen, Syke, and Thedinghausen melioration area. In winter, the fields were to be fertilized with the Weser's floodwaters. The Weser floods of 1946 left the melioration systems in poor condition. Between 1949 and 1954, attempts were made to restore them to working order. Irrigation was then discontinued altogether in 1961/62. A signposted bicycle route leads along the melioration systems.
