Due to the Third Reich's pursuit of autarky, iron ore was mined at Schönberg starting in 1935. Mining took place primarily in two fields: the northern field, mined from the Freiburg district of Sankt Georgen, and to a lesser extent, the southern field located in the Ebringen district. The ore from the southern field was transported to the loading point in Sankt Georgen via a cable car. In addition to a 360° panoramic view (Black Forest with Belchen, Schönberg, Rhine plain, Vosges, Kaiserstuhl and Tuniberg), the viewing point on the slightly lower "southern summit" of the Batzenberg at 324m offers two rotating sky loungers and a panoramic panel. The monument from 1976 commemorates the successful rescue of winegrowing in the 19th century (not only on the Batzenberg) by switching to grafted vines with rootstocks from America, which are resistant to phylloxera.
