Master butcher Kurt Neundorf, son of the landlord of the former Zum Straufhain inn in Streufdorf, came to Heldburg in 1931 and purchased house number 1 on Häfenmarkt from the Heubner brewery in Themar. It was a time of hyperinflation, and Kurt Neundorf had to pay 2,000 gold marks, the stable currency, for the property in Heldburg. His grandson, Dr. Ulrich Neundorf, recounts this. The gatehouse dates from 1560 and features a stone rebate for the former portcullis and stone hinges on the outer pointed arch portal. The first floor formerly housed the prison. The second floor was added in the 17th century to contain living quarters and a clock mechanism. The small clock bell is located in the arcaded upper story.
