Johann Heinrich August von Duncker was born in Rathenow and was the son of a pastor. He also studied theology himself. When he returned to Rathenow after his studies, he produced microscopes and glasses in the rectory. On March 10, 1801, he opened the Royal Privileged Optical Industrial Establishment, later known as the Rathenow Optical Works, with the garrison pastor Samuel Christoph Wagener. He invented the multi-grinding machine for the manufacture of lenses.
