A magnificent vantage point high above the Moselle region, complete with a map. The rock is quietly situated, a little off the path, but just right for taking in the vastness. Ideal for a short break—one of those places where you don't just take photos, but also briefly fall silent.

The town of Monzelfeld, located on the Hunsrück heights high above Bernkastel, is certainly one of the oldest in the pastoral area: it was first mentioned in documents in 634; in 1030 it was mentioned as the "villa" of two monasteries. In the Middle Ages, Monzelfeld was even surrounded by a fortification with four gates. In 1441, a Romanesque chapel dedicated to Saint Stephen was mentioned. It was a branch of the Bernkastel parish and probably stood in the same place as the current parish church, since corresponding components (capital remains) were discovered in 1958 when the church was expanded to its current size. Before 1717, the chapel was "plundered and devastated, then restored" due to warlike events (The Art Monuments of the Bernkastel District, 1935). The current church dates from 1788 and was extensively restored 100 years later. Before the last extension, St. Stephen's was a simple quarry stone building with a wooden ceiling and a three-sided choir, approximately 24 m long and almost 10 m wide. E From 1958 onwards, the church was expanded to its current size. Two axes of the old nave with the characteristic roof turret to the west were preserved, behind which there is now a new, spacious, transept-like choir building. A uniform wooden ceiling spans the entire, bright room. In 2005, the church was repainted by church painter Eberhard Münch. The central eye-catcher is now a beautiful crucifixion group from the high altar from 1789 with a wooden crucifix and life-size figures of Mary and John. Two other figures of Mary and the church's patron saint Stephen have been acquired recently. Photos of the church's stained glass windows can be found on the website of the Research Center for Stained Glass of the 20th Century e.V. Since 1962, the Monzelfeld church has housed a modest, probably second-hand pneumatic cone-chest organ from Späth (Ennetach) with seven registers on two manuals and a pedal. Source: https://www.pr-bernkastel-kues.de/schaetze/detail/Kirche-St.-Stephanus/ As we entered the church, the sun shone through the colorful windows. The meditative, quiet music that came from a radio recorder contributed to a very calm, spiritual atmosphere.

People used to take the Krimselpfad to exchange goods between the Hunsrück and the Moselle - in popular parlance it was the "egg and butter pad". Source: https://www.swr Fernsehen.de/landesschau-rp/gutzuwissen/broadcastcontrib-swr-2420.html
