The village of Niederwiera was first mentioned in a document in 1336 as "Wira" or "Wyra". As early as 1279, a "Witego plebanus in Wiera" was mentioned, which probably refers to the neighboring town of Oberwiera. Neukirchen's church dates from the 13th century. The church, originally built in the Gothic and Romanesque styles, was recently redesigned in the Classicist style. The 14th-century bell is one of the oldest in the region. The Gothic altar of Mary from 1520 was created by the Altenburg carver Franz Geringswald. It probably comes from the Remse monastery, whose daughter church the building was until the Reformation. The pulpit and coffered ceiling are from the Renaissance period.
