Hinterfrankenberg Castle, along with Frankenberg Castle (Vorderfrankenberg Castle), is the second castle on Frankenberg Hill. The two structures are separated by only about 62 meters. Hinterfrankenberg Castle is the older of the two. At its maximum extent, the castle stretched 230 meters. The castle grounds were protected by several outer baileys and moats. The main castle consisted of a curtain wall with five towers. A round keep stood freely in the inner courtyard. After being used as a quarry in the 19th century, only the twin towers, two vault remnants, the formwork of a well, and a single section of wall remain.
