At this point you cross the Sandbrücksau (Komoot calls this ‘Lindholmsau’) and reach the former Baltic Sea dike, which today lies inland, more precisely near the salt marshes.

Lake Barsbek and its surroundings were declared a nature reserve in 1982. The aim is to preserve "geologically significant features of a shallow, coastal brackish lake with extensive reed beds, species-rich brackish tall herbaceous marshes, and salt marsh areas, as well as a diverse fauna." The dike separates the lake and its surroundings from the influence of the Baltic Sea. This has led to dramatic changes in the site's characteristics. Without regular saltwater flooding, the soils and the lake have become salty, and the typical salt marsh plants have disappeared. Stein's landmark is its approximately 200-meter-long pier. It's a popular bathing jetty. From here, you can also enjoy a beautiful view of the ships entering and leaving Kiel Bay, as well as the Laboe Memorial.

Stein has a small commercial area, home to primarily tourism-oriented businesses. The sports center includes two soccer fields, a sports center, a youth room, and a small multi-purpose hall. Stein is also home to a kindergarten.

Even more natural is the Bottsand nudist beach, just a few hundred meters away, between the bird sanctuary and the Heidkate. The Heidkate Lighthouse is located in Heidkate on the Baltic Sea coast between the Kiel Fjord and Hohwacht Bay in the Kolberger Heide, north of Wendtorf. It serves as a warning light and indicates the restricted times for the firing practice areas in Putlos and Todendorf. It displays a yellow signal during firing in Todendorf, and a red signal during firing in Putlos, each at a five-second interval. When firing is taking place in both practice areas, it displays the red and yellow signals alternately. The lighthouse, along with the towers in Hubertsberg, Neuland, Wessek Lighthouse, Blankeck Lighthouse, and Heiligenhafen, is one of a series of lighthouses on the Schleswig-Holstein Baltic Sea coast used to secure the restricted area. To monitor environmental radioactivity, the Federal Office for Radiation Protection installed an ODL probe on the lighthouse property. It serves as a radioactive early warning.
