Hohenwerfen Castle has also served as a backdrop for various films, which gives it an additional touch of glamour. The castle is particularly well-known for the film “The Secret Service” (1968) starring Richard Burton and Clint Eastwood. Elizabeth Taylor and Richard Burton, who were one of the most famous couples in Hollywood in the 1960s, also contributed to the castle’s fame.

This over 900-year-old fortress sits majestically on a steep rocky cone above the Salzach Valley and offers breathtaking views of the surrounding mountains🙈. The castle has a rich history dating back to the 11th century. It was originally built by Archbishop Gebhard of Salzburg during the Investiture Controversy to protect the archbishopric. Over the centuries, the castle has served various purposes, including as a prison and hunting lodge. A particular highlight of our visit was certainly the bird of prey show. This impressive display shows the majestic birds in action and offers a unique opportunity to experience these fascinating animals up close.

Marco Schreyl also stopped here in the WDR program “beautiful – through the Alps on an e-bike”. The climb by bike is difficult and rocky

Really a great fortress. There is also a birds of prey show at the top. You can take the elevator up or walk about 20 minutes. The restaurant prices are awesome. You have to go through it or take care of yourself.

09/12/2022 - First of all, we had excellent weather 😎. We have already booked the tickets online, without any problems 😎. The footpath and guided tour were booked. Nice, comfortable climb that you can enjoy in nature, a tree/wood information trail is also installed here. The tour was great, we had enough time to take a close look at everything. Then we went to the falconry demonstration, impressive, you shouldn't miss it, everything was explained well here too. There is also a nice castle game for the children. We were here for about 4 hours but you need a little more if you want to see everything in detail - e.g. the two special must-visit exhibits...and the falconry exhibit as well.

Beautiful little Christmas market with specialties from the area. Delicious mulled wine and punch, including honey mead! There are really nice handicrafts to buy and the alphorn players were a treat for the ears

At the foot of the track there is an air-conditioned sanitary wing, my saving grace that day, also because of the fresh water supply.

Definitely worth a visit. Beautiful facility with a great falconry. A demonstration should not be missed under any circumstances.

In popular culture In the 1968 cinema film Where Eagles Dare the castle featured as the fictional Schloß Adler that is raided by a S.O.E. paratroop team during World War II. In the Amazon Video original series The Man in the High Castle (2015) the castle was used as the Führer's headquarters. The castle can be seen in the background of the "Do-Re-Mi" picnic scene in The Sound of Music starring Julie Andrews, which was filmed on a hillside showing the village of Werfen. In the video game Call of Duty: Black Ops III, the zombies map "Der Eisendrache" is based on 'Hohenwerfen Castle'

You must be able to pedal well to get to this vantage point. But the reward is a great view of the mountains. And if you want to recharge your batteries, you can do so directly in the managed Hochmaisalm.
