Beautiful pilgrimage church, unfortunately closed in winter

In March you have to bring your own food with you because the hut doesn't open until April.

The late Gothic pilgrimage church of St. Sebald stands on the Heiligenstein, which was used as a place of worship from early on. A small rock cave and a spring are located a little below the church. According to legend, Sebald was a miracle-working hermit who lived in a small cave for a long time on his journey from Rome to Nuremberg. The trade relations between the ironsmith town of Weyer and the German city of Nuremberg, where Sebald is buried, may have been crucial for the emergence of the Sebald cult at Heiligenstein. The church building dates from the second half of the 15th century; the bell tower was added in 1665 and acquired its current appearance in 1733. A little later, the baroque Sebaldi Chapel with the grotto was built.

The Roman Catholic parish church is dedicated to St. Andrew and is a listed building. The building was built in the first half of the 14th century and was expanded in 1989. On the south wall of the choir you can find early Gothic frescoes with scenes from the life of Mary. The church tower was largely built in 1697. There is also a stamp point for the Sebaldusweg at the church.

Very nice hut - is managed by voluntary AV members - be sure to inquire about opening times beforehand. Great food, wonderful poppy seed strudel from the Berghummel! We spent nice entertaining hours at the hut.

The Forsteralm Lift 4, also called the Hirschkogel lift, ends in the middle of the forest.
