Memorial for the victims who tried to escape from there to freedom and were shot or died there. It makes your heart heavy.

The Celts had their settlement here, the Romans controlled the Limes from here and the Slavs built a fearsome fortress here. After all, the castle was considered the western border of the Hungarian Empire for centuries. The castle was conquered many times, but was always rebuilt and fortified. Its end was, as is often the case in history, without any reason: in 1809, Thebes Castle was blown up by the French army.

Devín Upper Castle has a long history dating back to prehistoric times. The first fortified settlement on Devín Hill was built as early as the Bronze Age. Over the centuries, the castle was continually expanded and strengthened, playing an important strategic role as a defensive structure along the trade routes along the Danube. The castle reached its peak of importance in the Middle Ages, when it played a major role in the conflicts between Hungary, Austria and other powers. It served as an important military base and as a centre for trade and administration. Today, only ruins remain of Devín Upper Castle, but it still attracts visitors from all over the world. Its imposing location high above the rivers offers spectacular views of the surrounding countryside and the city of Bratislava. Visitors to Devín Upper Castle can explore the remains of the fortress walls, wander through the historic ruins and learn about the castle's fascinating history and its importance to the region. The castle is also a popular venue for cultural events and festivals celebrating Slovakia's rich cultural heritage.

In memory of the four hundred men and women who were killed on the borders of the Czechoslovakia during an attempt to escape behind the "Iron Curtain" in the years 1945-1989, as well as those who were forcibly expelled from their homeland, the Institute of National Memory and the Confederation of Political Prisoners of Slovakia initiated the erection of the Freedom Gate monument under Devín Castle. at the confluence of the Morava and Danube rivers. The monument was ceremonially unveiled on November 17, 2005, on the Day of the Fight for Freedom and Democracy, by the Chairman of the National Council of the Slovak Republic, Pavol Hrušovský. The work of the author Petr Meszároš shows a broken gate, inside which there is a curved metal grate.

The confluence of the Danube and Moravia is one of the most idyllic places in Bratislava thanks to the unique natural scenery created by the connection of these rivers. It is located in the Devín part of Bratislava, under a rock cliff on which the remains of the equally popular Devín Castle stand. The combination of significant history, natural beauty and quick accessibility within the capital make this location a popular leisure area.
