The space between the two trunks of a forked tree has become home to a small sacred monument. A crucifix has been placed here, and a semicircular arch above it identifies it as the Leonhardt Cross. A round roof protects the cross from the elements.

Diex, the sunniest municipality in Austria! That's why I chose this tranquil village as my retirement home. 😊 Located on the southern foothills of the Saualpe at 1,153 m above sea level, it's a hiking paradise with numerous options, from leisurely strolls to challenging hikes. On a rock above a rest area, the hiker encounters another small sacred monument. However, this one—known as the "Messner's Cross"—is not designed in the usual manner for most crucifixes: The base for the cross is the upwardly open fork of a tree trunk, which is then capped with a protective gable roof. The resulting space between the branches reveals the actual cross, made of light wood and bearing the body of the crucified Christ.

The Diex parish church is one of the best preserved fortified churches in Carinthia and is located in the center of Diex on the southern slope of the Saualpe. It is dedicated to Saint Martin. The church was first mentioned in a Gurk land register in 1326, but its origins date back to before 1168.

From the street or from the bench you can enjoy a great view of the town of Diex with its impressive fortified church.

Since 2023, the old Diex warehouse has housed a small museum and a self-service shop with regional products (eggs, potatoes, pasta, flour, oils, bacon, soaps, creams, ...). Open all day.
