The “Henggate” at Gasserplatz Protocol on the execution of Josef Gasser, Feldkirch September 9, 1864 The last public execution of a regular death sentence took place in Vorarlberg 150 years ago. When two gendarmes tried to disarm the violent Josef Gasser in Lauterach on January 17, 1864, he shot one and seriously injured the other. Then he killed a relative who tried to appease him. Gasser barricaded himself in his house. Another man was killed in exchanges of fire. Gasser was tried before the Feldkirch district court. The “Feldkircher Zeitung”, a modern medium, reported from the courtroom. According to the Criminal Law of 1852, murder was to be punished with death and the punishment was to be carried out by hanging. The verdict was confirmed and a request for clemency from the emperor was rejected. The execution was precisely regulated in the Criminal Procedure Code of 1853. On September 9th, Gasser was driven to the execution site on the Seewiese in the Steinwald in Göfis, which has since been called “Gasserplatz”. After less than a minute from the time of the handover, Gasser, who remained composed and remorseful until the last moment, passed away, according to the minutes of the court commission. Gasserplatz nature reserve is a wetland GASSERPLATZ NATURE RESERVE The Gasserplatz nature reserve is a wetland that scientists have designated as a flat and intermediate moor. Furthermore, an oak tree on the northern edge of the forest at Gasserplatz is entered in the natural monument book. With a height of around 30 meters, a circumference of around 3.5 meters and an age of around 250 to 300 years, the oak is therefore protected. The last execution in Vorarlberg took place on this square in 1864. The condemned man, named Gasser, involuntarily gave this place his name. Glacier pot, Göfis NATURAL MONUMENT GLACIER POT A special natural monument is the glacier pot discovered during construction work on the Amberg motorway tunnel. The mighty glacier pot with the 'glacial eggs' was professionally uncovered and made accessible to the public. It was created in the last ice age, when the surface of the Ill glacier was still 1,800 meters above sea level. The glacial meltwater rushed down the crevasses, reached the rocky subsoil and had an eroding and eroding effect.
