The original Romanesque church building with a rectangular nave and a round apse was destroyed in the Hussite storm in 1425. The Gothic church building from the 15th century with a south tower suffered a fire in 1645. The Baroque west tower was built between 1701 and 1703. The new church was built using the Gothic nave walls between 1727 and 1728. The tower caught fire in March 1731, was renovated and extended in 1733. It was restored between 1962 and 1974 and the exterior was restored in 1986.

A farm used to stand on the south-east corner of the town. The "new" castle was built on its site from the Hungarian period after 1486 until the 18th century. Over the centuries, the owners were the Eitzing, Krausenegg and Hoyos families, before the Retz estate was acquired by the Imperial Court, War and Finance Councillor Konstantin Josef von Gatterburg in 1709. After the Baroque renovation from 1712, the building remained essentially unchanged.
