From the Lüderich hill, which rises to around 260 meters, the view stretches far across the Bergisches Land region. To the west, the landscape opens up towards the Cologne Lowland, where the hills gradually give way to flatter terrain. On clear days, you can even see the Cologne Cathedral. Traces of the mining that once took place around the Lüderich are still visible.

The hut is simple but charming, with a covered seating area that offers shelter from the rain and invites you to linger.

On clear days, the view even extends as far as the Siebengebirge and the Eifel Mountains. These views aren't permanently open, but rather unfold between clearings and forest edges—which makes them all the more charming.

A true idyll! Until 50 years ago, this area was a landfill for toxic sewage sludge. The 50-meter-high dam was built over the long-disused Grünewald mine. Behind it, huge quantities of sewage sludge from the LÜDERICH lead and zinc mine, located on the other side of the Sülz Valley, were permanently stored. The sludge was pumped up into the basin via an 800-meter-long pipeline across the Sülz Valley. It was deliberately planted with grasses and reeds, and in some places, it was allowed to silt up. Now, it is used by birds, including grey herons, as a resting and nesting site. However, only a long-term study can reveal how much heavy metal the birds accumulate in their bodies. The access routes to the interior are blocked by barriers and signs. We treated ourselves to a coffee there on our hike. The staff was very friendly, and they even provided water for the dogs.

This is more of a replica of the Grotto of Lourdes and is intended to be a quiet place for devotion and prayer.
