The over 200-year-old house originates from Seibersbach in the Hunsrück region and was dismantled by restorer Uwe Rumeney. It was initially rebuilt as a dilapidated half-timbered ruin above Oberwesel for the filming, and was subsequently restored over the course of the film's plot.
