The ponds are full of life.

A detour is definitely worth it in winter, when the place is less crowded and you can feel the vastness of the not always so friendly sea. The dovecote is not Venetian, but was built in 1955. As the plaque attached to it explains, the Empirikos family's mansion stood here until 1945. It was destroyed by the German Navy. The descendants donated the land for the construction of a hotel, but this apparently stalled at some point. The result is a terrible building ruin opposite, which completely disfigures this harbor district.

The detour is definitely worth it in winter, when there is not a soul in the square. Unfortunately, the naval museum located here is also closed then.

The museum, which is unfortunately only open Saturday to Monday (in winter 2024/25), offers a rich collection of well-documented finds for an entrance fee of EUR 2, especially from the ancient sites of Zagora and Paleopolis (9th century BC to the Roman and Byzantine eras). It is a bit difficult to reach this lighthouse by hiking.

The pedestrian area with many shops (mainly pastry shops) is located at the highest point, or "top" of the city. In the grill house Γιατάκι you can taste the original Andrus beer, which is brewed with water from the Lion's Fountain in Apikia.

If you have accommodation here, you can drink the water from the tap, which also comes from the many springs that are found here. The well house is not made of marble, only the spring casing.
