Great view

This towering obelisk stands at a grand 83 feet tall, constructed from white granite quarried in North Carolina. Dedicated in 1909, it sits on the park's highest point, Battleground Ridge, offering stunning panoramic views of the battlefield. Bronze tablets on the monument's sides tell the story of the battle, honoring the American victory and listing those who fought on both sides.

The Jacob Fork River Gorge Overlook is a popular stop on the way to Chestnut Knob. As the name indicates, it offers a great view of the Jacob Fork and big parts of the South Mountains State Park.

To reach the Chestnut Knob Overlook, it only takes a short detour from the actual peak of Chestnut Knob, that is certainly worth it! From the rocky viewpoint, you can enjoy great vistas of the green South Mountains State Park.

The Big Bear Trail, that leads to the falls of the same name, is one of the newest in the South Mountain State Park and makes a visit to the waterfalls possible. Compared to the famous High Shoals Falls, those falls are way less popular (but no less beautiful!) and if you're lucky, you can enjoy the waterfalls without any other people.

Measurements of High Shoals Falls range from 50 to 80 feet, and the giant cascade is the star of the park for good reason. If you run on one of the trails past the falls, you'll see way fewer people than on the waterfall trails, themselves. Snap a picture and keep on running!
