Hiking through the Northern Highlands/American Legion State Forest is a great way to dive into Wisconsin's natural beauty. Open daily from 8 a.m. to 10:30 p.m. and spanning 223,283 acres, the forest features 900 lakes and 18 family campgrounds. Hikers can spot 244 bird species, including common nesting pairs of bald eagles, ospreys, and loons.

Shannon Lake is an attractive lake in St. Germain, Wisconsin, with pleasant hiking trails around it, including a popular one that circumnavigates it. At Shannon Lake there is a small boat launch, around which you can often see people fishing and enjoying the water.

The lake is open to fishing, swimming, canoeing, and is a great spot to picnic. In the evening loons tend to frequent the lake.
