This hike goes between Girdwood and Eagle River. It's a beautiful hike that covers a lot of various terrain.

A railed wooden bridge crosses Fish Creek and connects you to the paved Coastal Trail on either side. There is a little rest area here and you get serine views of the estuary. Out across the Knik arm you can see the mountains and towering peak of Denali.

Blueberry Knoll is named for the plentiful berries that populate its slopes in autumn—but this is such a popular area that they get picked out very quickly. Blink, and you'll miss them! You'll hike right past the knoll on your way up Flattop, or you can treat it as its own destination, hiking a complete loop around it to enjoy the views in all directions before you head back down.

This is the start of the Eklutna Lakeside Trail, which runs for miles along the aforementioned lake. The trail is actually an old road, and motorized traffic (ATVs and snowmachines, depending on trail conditions) is allowed Sunday through Wednesday. You can still bike on those days, and there are a few cutoffs that are only open to non-motorized traffic and offer you chances at a quieter ride. However, the cutoffs are frequently eroded and washed out.

Once upon a time, you could see Portage Glacier from this viewpoint. Now it has receded behind a corner of the mountains, so from here you can only see the lake left behind by the glacier, and every so often a few icebergs might still float by. Still, the lake itself is wildly beautiful and the small visitor center nearby is interesting to visit... if it's open. This is the gravel shore of Eklutna Lake, which is absolutely lousy for riding on most bikes but wonderful for a pre- or post-ride picnic and marveling at the lake, which really is a gem of the greater Anchorage area. Interestingly, it's also the drinking water reservoir for Anchorage.

The Eagle River Nature Center is a wonderful facility with lots of educational programming for all ages. The trails around the nature center are always open, even if the building is closed, with one big exception: The Albert Loop Trail is closed every fall to reduce dangerous bear encounters while salmon are running in the nearby river. Please respect these closures. Parking for a car costs $5... but of course parking your bike is free.

This park has open sports fields, a picnic pavilion that is free for use if not reserved by another party (fee applies), and some playground equipment. It's also a great place to access the unpaved, but still pretty easy to ride, network of multi-use trails on this side of town.
