A monastery complex has stood in Münchenlohra for 800 years, visible from afar. It dominates the landscape between the Harz and Hainleite mountains, between Windleite and Eichsfelder Pforte. A monastery complex with a very eventful history.

Since its reconstruction, St. Gangolf's has once again become a three-aisled basilica on a cruciform ground plan with a double-towered westwork. The choir and the two transepts are topped with apses. Beneath the westwork is a two-aisled Romanesque vestibule with three freestanding columns and a partially painted groin vault. The main apse of the church contains the Gothic altar of the Virgin Mary. It was built between 1510 and 1515 and originally came from the church of Karritz in the Altmark region. It was brought to Münchenlohra in 1957. It was previously housed in Stendal Cathedral. The baptismal font dates from the 15th century. Source: Wikipedia
