Wonderful abandoned basalt quarry with a tunnel in the rock.. the water level in it unfortunately prevents you from getting through at the moment

The Lahnaue nature reserve includes wet meadows and several lakes that were created from former gravel pits. The area has developed into an important resting and transit area for waterfowl. So always stay on the path. If you keep quiet, you have a good chance of spotting some of the shy birds.

Didn't know that it was a former volcano 🌋. But where else should the basalt come from?

Update June 2021 - Quote: "The 617.6 m high Bartenstein is located in the middle of a dense fir forest" (what is probably meant here is spruce 😉). But that will probably be over soon! All around there are almost only dead trees 😖

Very impressive gorge. I honestly didn't expect that. Walking through the stairs is also quite easy.

The Wilhelmsteine, formerly called Bucheine [1], are a group of rocks made of iron pebbles (hardnesses) on the south-south-east high elevations of the Angelburg, the highest mountain in the Gladenbacher Bergland, in the Scheldt Forest. They are located in the municipality of Siegbach in the Hessian Lahn-Dill district and are a geotope of the Westerwald-Lahn-Taunus National Geopark. The group of rocks consists of several individual rocks, the highest specimen of which rises about 15 m high. Such a rock formation is also known as a "rock castle".

Interesting rock formation. We also found a geocache there.
