magnificent path to the Ceyrat gorges

Lake Aydat is the largest natural lake in Auvergne. It is a volcanic dam nestled in the heart of the Auvergne Volcanoes Regional Nature Park. The view of the lake and the volcanoes is superb. Opposite you can see Sauteyras and Aydat beach.

Beautiful, medieval church from the 12th century with a three-aisled nave. The church was open when we visited.

The Ceyrat gorges can be ascended by taking a pleasant path which runs along the Artière.

The Fohet Menhir, or Pierre-Longue lying menhir, is a 4.75m high menhir that has remained lying on the ground for a long time. Lying thus, it once served as a site for prayers during the passage of mortuary convoys. It was straightened on December 31, 1991 at midnight by geobiology specialists.

As you go around the lake to this point, the land rises and gives you the opportunity to see and appreciate the lake from this fantastic angle. The elevation also allows you to see Puy-de-Dôme in the distance. A real treat.

This lake formed about 8,400 years ago is the result of a natural dam due to lava flows from the Puys de la Vache and Lassolas. It is a shallow lake. From here you have a very nice view of this body of water.
