Dirt road suitable for everyone if you come from Rocca della Verruca to reach it you need to climb the Lombardona, a very challenging climb.

On the top of Monte Verruca, at 537 meters above sea level, an ancient and decaying fortress dominates the Pisan plain and the Arno valley. According to legend, there is a connection – underground and secret – between the fortress and the center of the city of Pisa.

The Sasso della Dolorosa (682 m a.s.l.) is a peak belonging to the small mountain range of the Monti Pisani; from its top start the watershed lines that form the borders between the valleys of Vicopisano, Buti and Calci. It is particularly known for the fact that the Florentines, engaged in the war against Pisa, built a triangular-plan fort in 1496, with the dual purpose of isolating the Verruca fortress and better controlling the situation in the three surrounding valleys, the position strategic position of the top, in fact, being on the intersection point of the already mentioned watershed lines, it allowed a great freedom of action. The Verruca fortress rises in the municipality of Calci, in the province of Pisa, on the top of Monte Verruca. It can be reached by following the Firenze-Pisa highway, exiting at Cascina, then continuing towards Vicopisano. From the village, take the 'strada della Verruca' which starts from the village cemetery. Although largely unpaved, it can be traveled by car up to the foot of the rock where the Rocca stands. From the center of Vicopisano, take the Via dei Mulini which, in an already wild environment and in a mature holm oak wood, allows us to savor the nature of Monte Pisano. The vegetation then gives way to the reforestation of pine up to the Campo dei Lupi locality. From here, proceed on path 00 towards San Giovanni alla Vena along the Perocchio-Agreste ridge with beautiful views of both the town of Vicopisano and the Arno plain. The return after the short crossing takes place along the old dirt road "dei tre ponti" to the center of the town

Although not very high, it constitutes an excellent vantage point above San Giovanni alla Vena. Also accessible to beginners. But beware of the last few meters of the climb: they have a considerable slope. Recommended.
