The Osteria del Tancia was built towards the end of the Middle Ages, around the 15th century. It arose in a strategic position, on the pass of Mount Tancia, the highest peak of the Sabine Mountains, at about 800 meters above sea level. For centuries, the Osteria del Tancia represented the most important stop along the Via del Tancia, which was the main connection between the Rieti basin and the Sabina Tiberina. This road was frequently traveled by merchants, shepherds who practiced transhumance, pilgrims and bandits.

The remains of the ancient Roman city, crossed by the Via Flaminia and lapped by a bend of the Tiber, are set in a natural landscape of remarkable beauty, a perfect synthesis of archeology and nature with a centuries-old history.

This splendid archaeological park from the Roman era can be visited all year round for free. The park extends for 36 hectares from the nearby bend of the Tiber to under the modern Otricoli. Right on the Tiber river there are still the remains of the used Oil Port active until the 16th century. The remains of what were once thermal baths, amphitheaters and villas are perfectly preserved and extraordinarily integrated into the natural context of the area.

Monte Pizzuto, with its 1288 metres, is the second peak of the Monti Sabini after the nearby Monte Tancia. Unlike the latter, it enjoys a much wider panoramic view. On one side on the Tiber Valley and Mount Soratte and on the other on the Central Apennines with the clearly visible massifs of Terminillo and Gran Sasso.

With a small detour from the main path you reach the cave of San Michele Arcangelo. Here you can admire the frescoes and the altar dedicated to San Michele, there is a picnic table, and nearby there are cliffs for sport climbing.

At this point immersed in the Sabine Mountains, the Gemini Valley widens to make room for the meadows of Poggio Perugino. In addition to being a pasture for cows and horses, it is the crossroads of many paths to reach the surrounding peaks.
