We then take a metal staircase to descend into the Gor du Vauseyon valley. This immersion in this unique site, where the river has sculpted the stone, is a true time machine: from the 16th century onwards, the force of the water powered mills and sawmills here. The Maison du Prussien, now a hotel-restaurant, and the remains of the Moulin Chambrier bear witness to this pre-industrial era.

Anyone who passes this point cannot help but wonder who or when this impressive stretch of road was built. It somehow transports us back to the time of the Romans and Helvetians. Who knows? Perhaps it was just a simple construction worker named Gustave Dubois (name fictitious) who built it in 1963 on behalf of the city of Neuenburg. Of course, it is all pure speculation. Perhaps one day, someone will explain it to us. We are excited. Until then, however... for us it remains a path from the time of the Romans and Helvetians. ;-)

Did you know? The old town, also called "le Bourg", consists of nothing more than a pretty street with two rows of houses. It is part of the federal inventory of protected sites and townscapes worth preserving. If you want to visit le Bourg, you should definitely also pay a visit to the castle. And if you are a good walker, you can also visit the Seyon Gorge, which connects the Valangin with Neuchâtel.

Château Valangin is a small castle. It contains a museum that is open (as of 2024) from March to October. The opening times are as follows. Wed - Sat 1 p.m. - 5 p.m. Sun 11 a.m. - 5 p.m. Entry is free with the Raiffeisen Memberplus card. The museum extends over three floors. Not wheelchair accessible! In the gardens, 9 different herbs and flower beds display crops from the Middle Ages. The castle complex also has a picnic area and a barbecue area.
