The Brandenburg Castle ruins tower impressively above the Werra Valley. We saw them several times from the Werra Castle Trail and eventually visited them. The view from up here is magnificent!

Martin Luther grew up in Mansfeld, but he spent the most important and formative years of his school days in Eisenach: from 1498 to 1501 he attended the Eisenach Latin School in St. Georgen to prepare for his studies at the University of Erfurt. During this time he lived with the Cotta and Schalbe families, the then owners of today's Lutherhaus. The famous “Lutherstuben” from 1356, which have been one of the most famous places of remembrance of the Reformation since the 19th century, are a reminder of this. The European Heritage Site has been a museum since 1956. In preparation for the Reformation anniversary in 2017, the Lutherhaus was extensively renovated from 2013 to 2015. The inner courtyard is well worth seeing with the Palas, the cistern, its half-timbered buildings and the medieval castle garden. Everything is renovated and beautifully prepared.
