The historic center is beautiful and rises up to the Monforte castle.

The medieval city and capital of Molise is located at 700 meters above sea level. Campobasso (Campuasce in dialect) is dominated by the Monforte castle which stands at the top of the hill. Other important monuments to see are the cathedral of the Holy Trinity and the church of Sant'Antonio Abate.

Fred Bongusto, pseudonym of Alfredo Antonio Carlo Buongusto (Campobasso, 6 April 1935 – Rome, 8 November 2019), thanks to his persuasive voice was one of the most loved Italian singers between the Sixties and Seventies.

Leaving the university secretaries behind you, you cross the underpass to reach the center of Campobasso. Murals are present to give an artistic touch to the reinforced concrete and the junction of elevated roads.

Castel Monforte dominates Campobasso from the city hill. It takes its name from Count Nicola II Monforte, who restored it in 1458 after an earthquake. The castle has a square plan with four corner towers and an internal courtyard. Today it is a national monument, venue for cultural events, and houses the Air Force meteorological station.

The cathedral of the Holy Trinity is the mother church of Campobasso and seat of the metropolitan archdiocese. It is worth a visit inside because it is full of frescoes, stained glass windows and a pipe organ. It was destroyed by the earthquake of 1805 and rebuilt in the neoclassical style in the 19th century.

Campobasso is the capital of Molise and a city of medieval origin dominated by the hill of the Monforte castle. It stands at an altitude of 700 metres, between the Biferno and Fortore rivers, and has been awarded the title of village of notable historical interest. Here there are all the services and a well-connected railway station.
