Even at the height of summer (and there has been very little rain this summer) this is a very boggy walk and you need to be very sure footed with good waterproof footwear. The views are excellent on a clear day. Would I do it again, probably not.

Wellies are strongly recommended!

You can’t continue on this road and take the forrest track on to Stration.

Fantastic views across the wild rolling hills of Ayrshire. On a clear day, you should be able to spot Loch Braden.

This secluded and peaceful loch is nestled in the wide-open hills of south Ayrshire. Take a seat and enjoy the views.

Castle ruins on the side of Loch Doon. According to reports the ruins are currently fenced off (Oct 2022). but it's still worth stopping by the site for a look.

Unfortunately the Health and Safety mob have fenced off this ruin as they are doing to many such structures in Scotland.

Loch Doon Castle used to be located on an island within Loch Doon. It was dismantled and rebuilt on the side of the loch after the loch water level was raised in the 1930s for a hydro-electric scheme. Plenty of history to appreciate as the caslte was built in the 14th century and important in the Scottish wars of independence. Great views of the Loch too, so a good place to stop and explore.

Good road surface around the west side of the Loch. Fantastic views over the water and over Galloway park on the other side.

I also thought if this was unoccupied it would be a great camp spot but then there was another perfect spot 2mins later towards Loch Doon 🙌

A bench with a lovely view over Loch Riecawr in Galloway. We were here in the early morning and watched the geese taking off and landing on the still loch.

This hill has a wide plateau top. We approached from the direction of Craigmasheenie and it was a tough slog over boggy, uneven ground as part of the Ring of Fire route. This area has such a remote feel.

This pin marks the highest point on Shalloch on Minnoch but there is also a trig pillar and shelter north-west of this cairn. If you hike to this mountain from the North Top in march, be sure you don't trample any frogs along the way! There are hundreds breeding here in early spring.

Great place to bivvy for the night albeit a little exposed...the layers were on that night.

This viewpoint is on the Carrick Forest Drive which is closed to motor vehicles for 2021, but open for walkers and cyclists. Bliss on a bike 🚴‍♂️😎

Lovely open space for a bivvy & listening to the Famous Black Grouse, spectacular views of the locals hills/moorland.

App says, “suitable for all skill levels” but I’d say only just. Sturdy boots 🥾 are needed.
