残念ながら、遺跡からはあまり残っていませんが、Laucherttalの壮大な景色が楽しめます。

Don't be confused - the signposts don't say "Burg Hertenstein" but "Altes Schloß"

A small bridge leads to the rocky outcrop where Hertenstein Castle once stood. Unfortunately, nothing can be seen here anymore. There is a bench on the small rocky plateau where you can enjoy the expansive view of the Jungnauer Ried.

The freely accessible ruin is located on a rocky pinnacle at the end of the “Altes Schloss” forest north of Sigmaringen, to the right of the Lauchert near the Nollhof. The Lauchert valley is at 606 m above sea level, the castle at 650 meters. The few remains of the former knights' castles Hertenstein and Isikofen lie on two beautiful rocks facing each other and separated by the Lauchert. The ruin is on the Witbergrunde premium hiking trail of the Donaufelsenläufe. First mentioned in 1250, the castle was the ancestral seat of the Lords of Hertenstein. The Hertensteins are of the same tribe as the Hornsteins. Both families had the same coat of arms. The history of the castle's founding is still unclear. It is believed to have been built towards the end of the 12th century, which is said to be confirmed by ceramic finds. The first Hertensteins were not mentioned until the middle of the 13th century (1243). In 1250, the brothers Heinrich and Albrecht von Hertenstein are mentioned as servants of Count Wolfrad von Veringen. From 1276 to 1317, the progenitor of the surviving members of the later renamed Hornstein-Grüningen family, Burkhard von Hertenstein, lived. Between 1350 and 1385, Brun I von Hertenstein moved to Daugendorf and gave up the small castle. In 1449, Brun III sold the Hertenstein castle to the city of Sigmaringen. His descendants acquired Grüningen Castle and from 1472 called themselves "von Hornstein, called von Hertenstein" and from 1538 only "von Hornstein".
