Laufenburg was first documented in 1173, when the monastery in Säckingen granted the town as a fief to the Habsburgs. The first documented mention of Loufenberc dates back to 1207; the place name means "mountain near the waterfall, near the whirlpool, near the rapids" (Wikipedia).

Laufenburg is a small but beautifully preserved town right on the Rhine. There isn't a huge amount to see, but what there is is lovely.

Actually, there are two towns: Laufenburg (Baden) on the German side and Laufenburg AG (Aargau) on the Swiss side. The Swiss part was formerly called "multiple towns" or Grosslaufenburg, while the now Baden part is called "lesser towns" or Kleinlaufenburg. The ascent to the top of the tower leads first via a narrow spiral staircase, then up a solid steel staircase to the tower platform. Caution! The view from the top of the tower is limited. The high surrounding wall and the exit of the stairwell prevent a clear 360° view. Kids, in particular, will miss out on this and will probably be disappointed.
