The collegiate church, to which the twin towers belonged, is said to have been consecrated in 1172 in the presence of Frederick Barbarossa and Udo of Naumburg. It was used as a prison and workhouse. The master builder Friedrich Sprenger carried out extensive repairs to the tower complex from 1871 to 1873[1] and removed some extensions. During the GDR era, a museum for medieval craftsmanship was located in the Red Tips until 1972.
