Really nice ride on a well maintained surface in the dray, but it is sandy and I imagine very hard to pass in the winter has nice views.

Lovely views onto the halls, the surface here is good in the summer to early autumn

The fantastic bailey gate here reminds me of a similar specimen I saw in Belgium at Veurne. Not far from here is the Red Lion Hostel which is run by a 90 year old lady called Alison, wonderful place to stay if you get the chance.

Lovely crossing to the south of Castle Acre if you come in following the Peddars way, there is a view out to the old Monastery.

Sandy in the dry

Excellent cafe/tearoom, for eat in or takeaway on the benches outside the front or opposite on the green. Open 10am-3.30pm every day in spring/summer (kitchen closes 2.30pm), less in winter.

Superb former small medieval town, now just a village, but with scenic streets and buildings, a medieval gatehouse, castle and priory (all now ruined), as well as a very nice cafe and pub.

The hall is only just visible over the hedge as you go past. Easy to miss if you're not looking out for it.

The lane south of the ford is narrow with a very poor surface. It, and the ford, are passable on a road bike but better suited to a gravel bike.

If you are coming from South Acre heading up to High Street, you need to pass through the gate to get to the castle ruins. I missed them on my direct route to the Peddar's Way (northbound).

Fantastic cake and coffee with really friendly service. Castle Acre is the first viable pitstop along the Peddars Way after leaving Thetford/ Knettishall Heath.

Narford Hall can stake a claim to be one of Norfolk’s grandest houses, yet it is also one of its least known. It is privately owned.

The ford crosses the River Nar on South Acre road. There is a fairly steep drop-off into the water. Although much beloved by motocross riders, unless you are VERY confident on your road bike, visiting during a drought or don't mind getting wet, I recommend the foot-bridge.
