Ok, so it’s not an easy ride up as it has narrow and rocky sections. However a committed intermediate level rider should at least enjoy the bits they can ride, and the views across the valley and up to Skiddaw House make it a worthwhile climb, even when pushing the bike. We did it in summer, so imagine it’s trickier in winter.

Lovely quiet roads, so much more peaceful than the south lakes!

Fantastic quiet road to ride and admire the views down over Mungrisdale to Troutbeck and the fells beyond.

Lovely views from Askham fell before the excellent decent towards Pooley Bridge.

An image above shows the lighting system switched on, however for one reason or another, it was off as I passed through on an overcast day. Another rider oncoming without lights (like me) was barely visible in the middle of the tunnel. Mercifully, we'd already spotted one another entering. If you have an urge to read your phone/navigation device on a similarly gloomy day while the tunnel lighting system is switched off, my advice would be to do so before you enter the tunnel. You're going to need 100% attention if there's traffic ahead!

Low Gardens Bridge spans the River Lowther at Earl Henry's Drive. It is an old Grade II listed stone arch bridge which has a new steel beam bridge next to it.

Among the many treasures of the English Lake District, Lowther Castle stands out. Built in the early 19th century on the site of two older houses, the castle once had a room for every day of the year and its gardens were famous in the north. Today, Lowther Castle is a great visitor attraction with dramatic ruins, beautiful gardens, and an adventure playground.

Bucket list climb, starts off gently but the gradient soon ramps up, unlikely to encounter many cars and the top half is not open to vehicles and gated off but permissible on bike.

Lovely quiet roads and extensive views

Probably the best way of getting from Howtown to Patterdale, nice climb up out of Howtown, a short steep section of bike carrying but then a killer down hill to brotherswater or patterdale

Nice and easy walk, not too steep for people who like to go, but struggle to up steep banks.

Greystoke is a lovely Cumbrian village boasting charming 17th-century cottages, a picturesque village green, and an ancient market cross with roots dating back to the early 1600s.

Lovely smooth gravel along the river, lots of picnic and paddle spots if its sunny! Ideal for children and balance bikes too!

Lovely double track through the woods along side the River Lowther.

Lovely bridge over the river and short muddy clumb. It gets VERY muddy after rain but it doesn't last long!

Brilliant cafe, gardens, adventure playground, walking and cycling trails. Large free car park is a brilliant place to start a bike ride.
