This castle, also known as 't Rood Kasteel (Red Castle), was the former residence of the Lords of Guigoven and is one of the few buildings built on the marshy soil of the Mombeek alluvial plain. Early sources mention it as early as the 13th century. The oldest parts of the complex (the house to the left of the gatehouse: 1619) date from the first half of the 17th century and were built in the Maasland Renaissance style. The 18th- and 19th-century renovations were generally carried out in the Classical and Neoclassical styles. Originally, it was a moated castle with a drawbridge as the only access. The current pond is a remnant of the former moat.

Beautiful route, only at the beginning it takes you into the woods, which isn't a very popular pass, so you'll have to get off your bike frequently. It's better to follow the gray gravel road and you'll end up in the same place.

Kasteel de Donnea is an elegant, U-shaped French-style country house that has dominated Tongersesteenweg in Guigoven since the early 19th century. Surrounded by an English landscape garden with distinctive trees and a stately farmhouse dating back to 1839, the estate exudes tranquility and grandeur. Behind the stucco facades and mansard roofs lies a story of nobility, wartime destruction, and meticulous restoration.

Even if the route along the canal isn't the shortest option, for example, for getting from Aachen to Zeeland, it's definitely a much more pleasant ride than taking the direct route through the Herentals, Malles, or Brechts. Great surface practically everywhere, no cars, and especially if you have a tailwind...
