Lobdeburg was first mentioned in 1166. The castle was most likely built by the Lords of Auhausen, appointed by the emperor as ministerials, who named the castle after the town of Lobeda. The Roda Monastery was a Cistercian monastery in Stadtroda (Thuringia). It was founded between 1228 and 1247 as a private monastery for the Lobdeburgers and also served as their burial place. It was seriously considered at times to re-found the lost University of Wittenberg in this monastery. But then (thank God) it became the empty Dominican monastery in Jena and so the university came to Jena.
