Derwent Dam, is a stunning neo-Gothic construction that far transcends function alone. Built between 1902 and 1916, it is 340 m in length and 35 m high. The dam is famously linked to WWII history; RAF’s 617 Squadron, the “Dambusters”, trained here using “bouncing bombs”.

The best route out of Sheffield to the Peaks from the West of the city. Often busy with dog walkers and families so take it easy.

Beautiful picnic spot all year round, great in summer to have a quick dip as quite deep in places.

Langsett Reservoir boasts well-maintained paths suitable for various abilities, making it ideal for walking, cycling, or even a leisurely stroll. The surrounding woodland and moorland offer diverse landscapes, changing beautifully with the seasons. The dam wall itself is an impressive feat of engineering, and walking across it provides great views of the reservoir and surrounding countryside.

When the Derwent reservoir is full, the water flows out through the 'plugholes' at the southern end. A mesmerising spectacle when there's a lot of water flowing and can be enhanced by a great sunrise.

Put the bike down and come do a bit of fishing … it’s a grayling hot spot and thy could hook a couple of brown trout too

A delightful cycle ride around Howden dam. I can’t highlight one particular spot as everywhere is beautiful. If you do this ride or walk at the weekend ,get there early because by 11am the car park starts to fill up

Great place to stop for a drink and/or a bite to eat before, during or after a ride, the car park is handy and there’s toilets, there’s also a bike maintenance station and a wash too, the visitors centre is only closed 2 days a year, Christmas Day and Boxing Day?

Derwent Reservoir is the middle of three linear reservoirs running north to south in the Peak District that supplies nearly all of the water for Derbyshire. Derwent Dam itself is a stone built dam that was built between 1902 and 1916. The dam and its twin stone towers are noted for being the aiming points for the RAF’s iconic 617 ‘Dambuster’ squadron when they practiced their low level flights during WW2 before they set off to bomb the German dams in the Ruhr Valley using Barnes Wallace revolutionary bouncing bombs. It is a beautiful area, and the dam is a very impressive feature that is 114 feet (35 m) high and 1,110 feet (340 m) in length. The base of the dam is a whopping 178 feet (54 m) thick.
