The Werra Bridge in Creuzburg, together with the Liborius Chapel on the eastern bank, forms one of the town's landmarks. The bridge is the oldest surviving natural stone bridge in the eastern German states and the oldest surviving bridge along the entire course of the Werra River. Creuzburg Castle is one of Thuringia's five Landgrave castles. Landgrave Hermann I began construction of a castle (Creuzburg Castle) on the hill and had the peasants scattered throughout the region gathered into a settlement at the foot of the mountain. Thus, the town of Creuzburg was planned and granted city rights, including the use of a coat of arms and jurisdiction, in 1213, and surrounded by a wall. During its heyday, it was often a residence of Louis IV and his wife, Saint Elizabeth.
