A short detour to the Greifenstein Castle ruins is definitely worthwhile. However, there's no long-distance view from up here.

Normannstein Castle is impressively situated high above the town of Treffurt and offers magnificent views over the old town and the Werra Valley. The castle complex is well restored and can be walked around in a circle.

Not much is known about Greifestein Castle, neither who inhabited it, nor who built it, nor when. What is known, however, is that it probably belonged to a robber baron, leading to its capture by a civilian army. The Diocese of Mainz finally had it rebuilt in 1397 and secured the nearby border with Hesse, as border disputes arose repeatedly. It wasn't until 1583 that a firm agreement was reached on the current borders, and the castle slowly fell into obscurity. On the castle hill, there are still a cellar vault and the keep.

Definitely worth it, lots of information about the history of the Werra.

The foundation walls are still standing... Nice place for a snack with a view of Hessian Switzerland.

The castle of the former district administrator of Keudel, built in 1904 in the Renaissance style, today's Castle Hotel Wolfsbrunnen is located in the heart of Germany in the middle of the Werra Valley on Lake Werratal. The double, southern terrace in particular offers a great photo opportunity.

If you're lucky like us, the owner will give you a guided tour without registering. The only bad thing is the damage caused by the failure of the authorities.
