There are plenty of places to sit at Altenstein Castle. 👍

Not only ancient history has left its mark on Altenstein Castle, but also the division of Germany. The ensemble is quite interesting.

quite inconspicuous but well-kept

Until 1945, the area around Altenstein Castle belonged to the Hessian state forest of Allendorf and then came to the Thuringian district of Eichsfeld as a result of the Wanfried Agreement through an exchange of territories. Until 1954 the castle was still used as a dwelling for the forester, after that for a few years as a children's holiday camp. In 1973 the castle complex was blown up as part of border security measures on the Inner German border. The area close to the border was no longer accessible to the population until the end of 1989.

An interesting ruin with a small vaulted cellar and a beautiful view. A flashlight is useful because of the cellar.

One of the most beautiful medieval castle ruins

The Altenstein ruins are definitely worth a jump again if you are hiking on the P16. It is about 80 meters from the actual hiking trail. There is also a refuge here where you can take a wonderful rest. You can walk around the ruins and have some great views. In front of the ruins there is a small information board with a lot of interesting information about these walls.

The fortified churchyard of Weißenborn is one of the rare surviving examples of mediaeval churchyard castles in the low mountain range. In the case of the plant, probably in the 12th and 13th centuries, a mountain spur towering steeply above the old village of Weißenborn was used.
