城は1679年から1691年にかけて、中世のウォーターキャッスルに代わって、ホーエンローエ＝キュンツェルザウ伯爵ヨハン・ルートヴィヒによって4翼の複合施設として建設されました。1679年から1868年までホーエンローエ家の居城であり、1873年から1934年まで教員養成学校でした。1937年から1939年にかけて建物は完全に改築され、今日では寄宿舎付きの州立ギムナジウムが入居しています。
