The legend surrounding the origin of the Maria Eck pilgrimage church tells that, on the nights of major Marian feast days, lumberjacks saw unusual rays of light falling from the sky onto a hill. These luminous phenomena were interpreted as a divine sign to build a church in honor of the Holy Mother of God on this site. Subsequently, the first small chapel was built there between 1618 and 1635, laying the foundation for the later pilgrimage church. This legend continues to form the spiritual foundation for the pilgrimage to Maria Eck.
