Muleteers, arriving after a day's march from Passau or Wallern, were required to find lodging and care for their horses here, while local farmers could offer their produce for sale. The resulting weekly markets and a flourishing salt trade soon brought prosperity to Waldkirchen. After the market was repeatedly threatened by Bohemian troops, the Prince-Bishop of Passau had Waldkirchen surrounded by a ring wall between 1460 and 1470, parts of which are still preserved today.
