Until 1945, the area around Altenstein Castle belonged to the Hessian state forest of Allendorf and then came to the Thuringian district of Eichsfeld as a result of the Wanfried Agreement through an exchange of territories. The Altenstein ruins are definitely worth a jump again if you are hiking on the P16. It is about 80 meters from the actual hiking trail. There is also a refuge here where you can take a wonderful rest. You can walk around the ruins and have some great views. In front of the ruins there is a small information board with a lot of interesting information about these walls.
