Russell Pond is deep in the heart of Baxter State Park and at the center of a wide network of trails. There is camping by the pond which can be a nice jumping off point to explore these trails from a convenient, and scenic location.

You get a fantastic view across Sandy Stream Pond to South Turner Mountain from here. There is another overlook a little ways further up the pond which grants epic views of Katahdin and its surrounding peaks. You can do a short loop around the pond, run up South Turner for some vert, or venture north along the flat, scenic Russell Ponds Trail which takes you all the way to the north end of the park.

The Seboeis Riverside Trail is a popular backpacking, hiking, running, and biking trail in the Katahdin Woods and Waters National Monument area. The trail is mostly wide double-track that is blocked off to vehicles and follows the river the entire time. There are a number of viewpoints of rapids, canyons, and waterfalls within the waterway on the side of the trail.

Shin Brook Falls is a 30-foot tall waterfall with multiple cascades feeding into the drop. The trail accessing the fall is mainly on an old forest road, but the final section down to the water is a steep embankment with ropes, trees, and roots acting as handholds. The falls flow year round, but they are most impressive in the spring when the snow begins to melt.
