Unfortunately, the windmill is scaffolded so that no tours can take place there at the moment

Esterwegen is always a good idea

The bridge looks very different now and I can only recommend this cycle route. No cars, lots of space, and at the Erikasee you always have to look to see if there are any restaurants or not. But Esterwegen is 4 km away, so you'll definitely find something there.

1933-1945 The Emsland Camps - The National Socialists and their henchmen set up a total of 15 concentration, penal and prisoner of war camps in the Emsland region. Twelve of them are located in the area of today's Emsland district, three in the Grafschaft Bentheim district. Thousands of people were held in the camps, including numerous "political prisoners" who stood in the way of the National Socialists enforcing their rule. The construction of the Emsland camps took place in three phases that overlapped in time: 1933-1936 Establishment and guarding of concentration camps by the SS (Börgermoor, Neusustrum, Esterwegen) 1934-1945 Penal camps under the supervision of the justice administration (Aschendorfermoor, Börgermoor, Rhede-Brual, Walchum, Neusustrum, Oberlangen, Esterwegen, Versen, Fullen) 1939-1945 Prisoner of war camps of the Wehrmacht High Command (Oberlangen, Wesuwe, Versen, Fullen, Groß Hesepe, Dalum, Wietmarschen, Bathorn, Alexisdorf) Hardly anything of the former Emsland camps can be seen on site. At the locations of the former camps, information boards now provide information about the history of each camp. Bringing bikes or dogs is prohibited on the entire site.

The gallery Dutch windmill, built in 1870, was completely renovated in 2002 and partially renovated in 2016. It is still fully operational. The entire wooden construction has remained unchanged since 1870. Numerous old agricultural tools are on display inside the mill. There is a museum in the immediate vicinity of the mill. Visitors can visit the mill by appointment. From May to September, the mill is open on the first and third Sunday of every month from 2:00 p.m. to 5:30 p.m. Members of the mill association offer coffee and homemade cakes in the museum on these days. So this beautiful tour around the transmission towers... Esterwegen, Bockhorst, Ostrhauderfehn is very varied and very nice to ride. The Erikasee in Esterwegen is worth a longer break to relax. In Bockhorst there is a bakery that has delicious cakes and sandwiches. And in Ostrhauderfehn there are several snack bars that also provide a hearty lunch.
