Mhm Holger writes: it's free in the off-season. That's not entirely true 😅. We were just there and paid €3.50 per person. With that you can visit a small exhibition and the open-air area. Definitely a pretty interesting place to experience history.

In the 9th and 10th centuries, the Warnowers, a Slavic people, settled on the lake, built a mighty ring wall on the (then) island and thus a castle that could only be reached via a bridge, and their village on the headland in front of it. All of this was excavated again (from 1973 onwards), and because everything was well preserved by the moor, it became an open-air museum and we can look at it. Very interesting, highly recommended. (Now in the off-season, the whole thing is even free.)

Extensive excavations took place between 1973 and 1980, during which remains of a Slavic settlement from the 9th and 10th centuries were uncovered.

The circular castle wall, visible from afar, is located on an offshore peninsula. It has a diameter of 50 meters. The castle complex was reconstructed based on the excavations and set up as an archaeological open-air museum

The town hall of Güstrow is a successor to the first town hall, which was built in the 13th century. The current seat of the Güstrow city administration was inaugurated in 1798 and is located in the center of the Mecklenburg town, right in the town center. Güstrow Cathedral is part of the North German brick Gothic style and has a rich interior from the late Romanesque period to the modern era, including Ernst Barlach's Floating Man. It is spread out on the southern edge of the city and exudes a great sense of calm. The cathedral square is a special ensemble in the city. Here is the oldest school in Mecklenburg, the former court of Wallenstein, and within sight we find the Renaissance castle. The cathedral was founded in 1226 and consecrated in 1335. In 1568 it became the Protestant court church and burial place for the Güstrow royal family until 1695, when the Güstrow line died out.
