To the east of the Great Holy Sea is the Small Holy Sea, which is privately owned but also protected. To the southwest are the sinkhole lake and the Heideweiher pond. The sinkhole lake was formed on April 14, 1913, during the last major sinkhole in the protected area.

The Great Holy Sea is the largest natural inland lake in North Rhine-Westphalia, located in the Tecklenburger Land region. It gives its name to the Holy Sea – Heupen nature reserve, in which it is located. It was formed several hundred years ago by a sinkhole; a tragic legend explains its origin in an immoral monastery on this site.

The section of the path from the car park to the LWL Museum is currently closed because the bridge is impassable. Instead, the path leads across the road to the LWL Museum. From there, the path is completely accessible, although currently very muddy.
