The heath is always worth a visit – not just during the heather bloom in August, when the landscape transforms into a glorious purple. The nature park stretches over 480 square kilometers between the heathland villages of Eschede, Hermannsburg, Müden, Unterlüß, and Winsen (Aller). The Southern Heath Nature Park offers protection to animals sensitive to disturbance, such as the crane and the black stork. Herds of Heidschnucke sheep (Heidschnucke sheep) take care of the landscape – they regularly nibble on the heather. Numerous hiking and cycling trails lead through the hilly heathland, which dates back to the Ice Age. Beautiful hiking tour, not so crowded

On the Heidschnuckenweg, the stage from Faßberg towards Celle, the juniper forest and the adjacent heathland are the first highlights. The route runs across and then along the edge, so that you can really enjoy the juniper forest to the full.

It's amazing when the heather blooms and the first mist moves over the heath in the morning.

Due to their varying locations, sometimes on a slope, sometimes on a south-facing slope, the heathlands bloom at different times, with the blooming beginning almost always the same. This means that you can find heather in bloom as early as the end of July, and the last flowers can sometimes be seen as late as October. The heather plant that is predominantly found in the Lüneburg Heath and characterizes its landscape is the common heather (Calluna vulgaris). It is often also called heather.
